What Mongodb is looking for in applicants

The database market is massive (IDC estimates it to be $121B+ by 2025!) and MongoDB is at the head of its disruption. At MongoDB we are transforming industries and empowering developers to build amazing apps that people use every day. We are the leading modern data platform and the first database provider to IPO in over 20 years. Join our team and be at the forefront of innovation and creativity.

MongoDB Atlas Data Lake (ADL) is a multi-tenant on-demand data storage and query processing service that allows users to query data from multiple data sources using the MongoDB Query Language (MQL). The ADL Team builds cloud-based distributed systems software and features that enable our users to natively query and analyze data stored across Cloud Providers (e.g. AWS S3) and MongoDB, in a stable and performant manner. ADL serves some of MongoDB’s largest and most performance sensitive customers.

We’re hiring talented Staff Software Engineers to help build out our core query optimization, distributed query and data processing engine, and massively scalable metadata storage engine.

Our team is distributed all across North America and we support office-based and remote work, and align projects with convenient work hours for each time-zone. We have lots of interesting problems to work on that have a direct impact on users - so we need your help!

The team is just setting out on a huge endeavor to optimally ingest large amounts of customer data and build out major components of our ultra-low latency query optimization and execution system. We need your help to design and build the heart of a distributed data storage and querying service and innovate with us!

This role can be based out of our New York City office or remotely in the United States.

Successful candidates will have the following qualities

  • 10+ years of experience in data management systems, including extensive experience in query processing
  • Experience with large code bases written in C++ or another systems programming language. You'll need to trace down defects, estimate work complexity, and design evolution and integration strategies as we implement new and improve existing components of the system
  • Significant background in database internals or building core components for data processing systems (including query execution, storage engines, autonomous tuning and workload optimization)
  • Excellent verbal and written technical communication skills and desire to collaborate with colleagues, mentor fellow engineers and lead projects
  • Track record of identifying problems, implementing solutions and delivering highly complex projects in distributed systems or databases

Position Expectations

  • Identify, design, implement, test novel solutions related to data storage and retrieval, query execution, query performance, query language enhancements or distributed data processing functionality
  • Research state-of-the art query systems to inform our design
  • Leverage deep knowledge of the strength and weakness of the product and the industry trends to provide technical vision and direction.
  • Advise management on decisions related to roadmap, processes, architecture and design
  • Work with other engineers to coordinate seamless changes in a feature-rich, large code base
  • Work with other teams working on the core database, cloud services, enterprise tools, and support to coordinate changes or contribute to their projects

Success Measures

  • In three months, you will have contributed to the design and development of a feature to be released to our customers
  • In six months, you’ll have taken on code review responsibilities and are playing an active role in drafting and reviewing the design for new features. You’ll have expanded the team's horizons by presenting a favorite paper or system architecture related to query systems
  • In twelve months, on the basis of your extensive past experience in the query space, you’ll have contributed to the long-term technical roadmap of the Atlas Data Lake team
